About
Umpy was designed and developed by umpires in Perth, Western Australia
For a few years, sourcing umpires for hockey leagues in WA has relied on a Facebook group called “Whistler’s 4 Hire”.
Although it has served its purpose, facebook groups are just not designed to handle the functionality required for this use.
So we took the learnings and frustrations from Whistler’s and developed an app for Hockey teams and umpires in WA.
We hope to have removed all the pain points and added even more functionality, including solutions focused on event organisers, like summer league and a club program umpire program management solution.
Is it perfect, no. We believe it is a big improvement on what was available in the past and we will continue to enhance the solution based on feedback from the same community.

- Choose Your Umpire: Browse the list of interested umpires and select the one that best fits your needs. Remember, you’re not required to pick the first applicant.
- Seamless Communication: Use our in-app messaging to confirm your umpire’s appointment and discuss any game-related details.
- Umpire Feedback System: After your game, provide feedback on your umpire’s performance. This feature will be available in version 2.0, enhancing the selection process for future games.

What does this cost?
Umpy is 100% free for umpires, teams, clubs, event organisers and umpire program managers.
Is the app and service really free?
Yes it is, there are no charges to use this service.

Umpy is designed to carry on from where Whistler’s 4 Hire started, a specific solution designed to help teams and umpires in WA connect with each other.
Who is behind Umpy?
A Perth based family consisting of players, umpires and a junior program manager.
Where can I get the app from?
The app will be available on both Apple and Android stores shortly.
How do I get paid as an umpire?
Umpy does not manage any financial payments, this is arranged between the umpire and the team as per normal.
Do I need to provide my banking details?
NO, we do not want to store or keep anyone’s bank details, that is shared between the umpire and the team manager, please take necessary safety precautions when sharing information like this.
How do I set up my team?
Once you have the app, you will be able to set up your team via your settings pages.
What details do you need from me for my profiles?
To set up your profile, we need your name, contact details, age, experience etc.
Why do you want to know my age? Will it be displayed for all to see?
We are going to show age ranges to team managers that umpire list their interest in their games, for example 16-19, 20-30, 30-40 etc, this will not be compulsory but could help you.
Do I need the app or can I use the web to use Umpy?
Everything will be managed via the app, no need to use the web.
Can I list my normal umpire via Umpy and manage comms with the app?
Yes, you can note your usual umpire within Umpy linked to your team to help you confirm their availability for the upcoming match(s). (Coming in version 2.0)
What are listed preferred umpires?
These are umpires that you know are good and happy to take them up on their offer should you list a game looking for an umpire, it speeds up the selection process. (Coming in version 2.0)
How do I avoid getting an umpire I don't want?
There is no automatic selection (unless they are a preferred umpire on your list), you don’t have to worry about selecting the first umpire that sees your listing, you get to choose from those that have shown interest in your game.
Do I have to select the first umpire that has shown interest in my game I have offered?
No, you select anyone from the list of those that have submitted their interest.
I don't want to negotiate my offered match fee for an umpire, is that possible?
Yes, as the team looking for the umpire you have the choice to mark your game as a set match fee or negotiable, you also have the option of changing this should you need to.
What is the going rate for umpiring?
In 2023 most of the games started at $50, it has been this rate for some time though, there is no set fee, it is an open market, no one is forced to take a game or pay a certain amount.
Once the game is completed how do I get paid?
Payment is arranged between the team manager and the umpire.
What payment options are there?
Mostly umpires are paid either in cash or via a bank transfer, make sure the agreed payment option is set before taking on a game.
Can I claim from Umpy if I don't get paid from a team?
No, Umpy does not take responsibility for payments, if you feel that a member of the community is not acting fairly it can be raised with admin.
What guarantee do I have that an umpire will arrive at my team's game?
Again, Umpy cannot provide any guarantee, however there is a messaging option with the app for both parties to chat and confirm arrangements.
Can I rate the umpire's performance after the game?
Yes, you can rate the umpire post the game for your reference. (Coming in version 2.0)
Who will see this rating?
Only the team manager that rates the umpire, in the case of a program, the mentors can rate an umpire and the program manager can view the details. (Coming in version 2.0)
Then why should I rate the umpire?
For your reference when that same umpire offers to umpire your match.
Can an umpire rate a team?
Yes, they can rate the team’s behaviour after the match has completed. (Coming in version 2.0)
How can this be used for future reference?
The umpire can use this info to decide if they want to offer to umpire this team again or even not see listings by this team looking for an umpire. (Coming in version 2.0)
What preference can an umpire set in their profile?
They can set their viewing filter to their preferred minimum match fee, leagues and divisions, locations they are prepared to umpire, their experience, their bio.
Are these preferences publicly available?
Only to team managers they have received an offer from said umpire to do their game.
Who has access to the chat history within the app?
The chat is only between the active participants, the system administrators will also have access to the chat in case of complaints or issues.
